Football365's Famous Euro Ladder Here we are again - Jack Wilshere climbs back into the top three, Harry Kane jumps again and Ross Barkley and Theo Walcott miss out. Don't shoot the guesser...

2 (2) - Joe Hart He literally has no competition; it's just as well that he is an excellent goalkeeper. And he did that swinging on the crossbar thing against Ireland that every right-thinking person loves. 3 (7) - Jack Wilshere From 2) in November to 7) in April to 3) in June. That pretty much illustrates the frustration of the brittle Wilshere, who simply needs to be fit enough for long enough to prove that he can be trusted in midfield against better opposition. England's one bright spark against Ireland became their driving force against Slovenia. No wonder he doesn't want the season to end. 4 (4) - Gary Cahill His decision-making (as illustrated against Slovenia) can be awful but he is - and yes, I do get bored of writing this - England's best option at centre-half. Even if Kurt Zouma usurps him at club level, he is England's vice-captain for a reason. His place is secure. 5 (3) - Raheem Sterling The Sun's Steven Howard called it a 'schoolboy error' when Hodgson chose Sterling to face Slovenia instead of Theo Walcott; The Sun's Steven Howard is wrong on this and many other things. Simply England's brightest attacking talent. 6 (9) - Jordan Henderson An absolute certainty for Hodgson's European Championship squad and near-certainty for the starting XI despite never producing an excellent England performance in 22 attempts. That he was much better at right-back against Slovenia is telling - he is a hardworking but limited player who needs a defined role. "Can you run up and down that wing, Jordan?" Of course I bloody can, boss. But who else? His discipline enables Wilshere to be brilliantly indisciplined. 7 (5) - Danny Welbeck Were the European Championship to start now, we suspect that Hodgson would field the same six as those that faced Slovenia, substituting Welbeck for Andros Townsend. And that's absolutely fine by us. 8 (11) - Phil Jones It really does seem that Hodgson will crowbar him in somewhere (he's started every game for which he has been fit since the World Cup). We can find reason behind most of the England manager's decisions, but Jones at right-back? Ahead of Clyne? Now that's mind-boggling. 9 (14) - Harry Kane Why has he moved without playing? Because we kept looking at the bench when England needed a goal, seeing Charlie Austin and Jamie Vardy, and saying 'we really could do with Harry Kane'. 10 (10) - Leighton Baines We are presuming that he is England's first-choice left-back until Hodgson chooses somebody in his stead in a meaningful game. Let's face it, none of Luke Shaw, Kieran Gibbs or Ryan Bertrand has knocked the old man off his perch. 11 (8) - Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain 'Unbeaten in 20 games for England so there's absolutely no sodding chance that Hodgson will leave him at home,' is what I have said before. Roy just likes him... 12 (17) - Chris Smalling ...and he also really likes Smalling, who he bought for Fulham back in the day. Be at peace with this while hoping that John Stones has a really, really good season. 13 (12) - James Milner Useful. Like a can opener. But most cans have ring-pulls these days. His list of starts since the World Cup says it all: San Marino, Scotland and Ireland.

Not So Average Joe Can Break The Mould

The circle of football life goes on. A matter of days after Aston Villa secured the free transfer signing of once 'Next Big Thing' Micah Richards, the new kid on the block walks through the doors at Liverpool. Welcome to Anfield, Joseph Dave Gomez. The central defender, born in 1997 but standing at a dominant 6ft 2, could not have asked for a more fitting warning concerning his progression. Richards, a player lauded for his physical attributes at such a young age, quickly discovered the path to stardom was more than a simple sprint and a shoulder barge. Many an English prospect lies by the wayside of that particularly well-trodden path. After signing for Liverpool for a reported initial £3.5million, Gomez seems likely to greet them with a quick wave as he passes by sooner rather than later. Of course, at the same point in his respective career, Richards was already a fully-fledged England international. Still the youngest-ever defender named in a Three Lions squad, the right-back had featured 79 times for Manchester City before exiting his teenage years. With 24 first-team appearances under his belt having only just turned 18, Gomez is staring into the abyss of his potential future. It isn't just the trials and tribulations faced by Richards which Gomez will be expected to learn from. A long line of young centre-backs have tried and failed to make the grade at Anfield. Tiago Ilori, Jack Hobbs, Danny Wilson and Gabriel Paletta all serve as reminders of the difficulty of the tasks ahead. Another who struggled at Liverpool in recent years was Sebastian Coates. Reports claim that Gomez is being signed to replace the Uruguayan. It's testament to his attitude that, despite his delve into the unknown, he wouldn't settle for a bit-part role even in his first season. "Definitely, that's my aim," he said of hoping to compete for a first-team place from the start. "I want to come in and challenge and be involved. But I know that there's top-quality players and the centre-backs and defenders already here are great. I'd like to come in, do my best and learn from them." An air of confidence and self-belief, but a youngster who knows full well how much he needs to improve. Gomez's physical attributes have rarely been doubted, but the mental aspect to his game is just as impressive. It's that aforementioned mental strength that has seen him rise and rise through the ranks wherever he is. At just 13 he was fast-tracked in Charlton's Under-18's side, while call-ups to the England U16, U17 and U19 ranks soon followed. Just last May the central defender played every minute of England's five games as they secured U17 European Championships glory, beating the conveyor belt of Dutch talent in the final. He was named in the Team of the Tournament. Months later he had made his debut for Charlton, before being named their Young Player of the Year for last season. Whatever you throw at the versatile star, he tackles head on. "I know the Premier League is obviously a step up but hopefully I can take it in my stride. I'm ready to learn and I'm looking forward to it. "I know that opportunities can be slim sometimes. But under a manager like Brendan, it speaks for itself." For all his new manager's deficiencies, preventing the progression of youngsters is not a criticism that you can use for Rodgers. One hopes the Northern Irishman can learn from his mistakes with Emre Can et al., and not Phil Jones-ify Gomez into a utility man. Gomez's style will certainly appeal to Rodgers. A ball-playing defender who, while his strengths clearly lie in the centre, is also adept at full-back. Similarities to Mamadou Sakho will be drawn, and understandably so. The Frenchman may come in for criticism - much of it undue - but he may be Gomez's perfect role model. Once the club's youngest centre-half, the 25-year-old is now arguably their best. Having shown enough already to prove he has the attributes to succeed where Richards and the rest failed, Gomez could be the man to usurp him soon. So amidst the cries of 'experience is needed', Liverpool fans can be assured they have a potential future England star on their hands, and just for £3.5m at that. Never mind 'experience', Gomez is more than ready to be drip-fed into the deep end come August.

Cech closing on Arsenal move Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech is closing in on a move to Premier League rivals Arsenal, according to Sky sources.

Sky sources report Cech, 33, has agreed personal terms in principle on a switch to the Emirates Stadium but we understand the two clubs are still not close to agreeing a fee and negotiations will continue this week. The transfer fee is unknown but it will be a cash only deal, with Chelsea's request to receive a home-grown player as part of the proposed transfer no longer being considered. Cech is said to be grateful to Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich for allowing him to move to whatever club he chooses, even though that is now likely to be London rivals Arsenal. The Czech Republic goalkeeper has one year left on his contract at Stamford Bridge but is searching for a new employer after spending much of last season as second choice behind Thibaut Courtois. Cech is believed to be keen to move to the Gunners although it is believed that Blues boss Jose Mourinho would prefer him to join French champions Paris Saint-Germain. Goodbye Petr! I'm glad he's staying in the premier league as it means he can get the clean sheet record, shame he can't do it with Chelsea but Courtois is our future so tough decisions had to be made. He's a massive upgrade on what they have at Arsenal so good luck to him there, I'm sure he'll shine and hopefully let in the odd six or so against us for old times sake...

The First Club Quiz Quiz We give you a player's current PL club and their first professional club...and you name the footballer. It's that easy...

He's convinced England boss Roy Hodgson and, perhaps most importantly, convinced himself. But if Jack Wilshere is to really make his new position work then he must persuade his club manager. Unfortunately, Arsene Wenger remains reluctant to acquiesce to the idea of the 23-year-old as a holding midfielder. The Arsenal boss said in October that he did not envisage Wilshere playing there and has been true to his word in the limited opportunities to test the theory since then. The ankle injury that kept the Gunners midfielder out over the winter has meant only three starts for Wilshere since his back-to-back man-of-the-match performances for England in November. The following week against Manchester United, Wenger positioned him as a No10 with two midfielders operating behind and when Wilshere returned to the starting line-up in May, it was to play out wide, cutting inside from the right flank. "He is not a ball-winner," said Wenger late last year in response to the calls for him to give Wilshere his chance as a deep-lying midfielder. "I believe he is more a guy who you want to get close to the final third. To keep him deep you take a big part of his efficiency away. He is a guy who likes to penetrate when there is many people, he can provoke free-kicks, he can create openings. It would be detrimental to his strengths in a position that is not his strength." Perhaps Wenger is right about Wilshere's ball-winning abilities, although he has certainly shown himself to be an enthusiastic tackler and appears more than willing to embrace the challenge of improving that aspect of his game. Wilshere made four tackles in the 3-2 win over Slovenia on Sunday - more than any England team-mate - and his tally of four interceptions was more than anyone else on the pitch.

ere we are again - Jack Wilshere climbs back into the top three, Harry Kane jumps again and Ross Barkley and Theo Walcott miss out. Don't shoot the guesser...

As ever, a reminder: The order below is based not on our opinion, but our estimation of Roy Hodgson's thoughts. Blame him, not us, if it makes you mad. 1 (1) - Wayne Rooney Rotten control against Ireland and then rotten finishing against Slovenia...until he scored the winner. And it was ever thus. He's a spurter. And if that doesn't make you queasy, you have a better stomach than I. 2 (2) - Joe Hart He literally has no competition; it's just as well that he is an excellent goalkeeper. Start Theo Walcott in the FA Cup final or risk losing both, says Charlie Nicholas

Charlie Nicholas has warned Arsene Wenger that he must start Theo Walcott in the FA Cup final or risk losing both. Walcott, who has 12 months to run on his current contract, scored a hat-trick in Arsenal's final-day 4-1 win over West Brom in just his fourth Premier League start of the season. Nicholas believes Walcott deserves to lead the line again against Aston Villa at Wembley on Saturday in place of Olivier Giroud, who has failed to score in his last eight appearances. Charlie predicts Find out what 120/1 scorecast Charlie is predicting for the FA Cup final in his Sky Bet tip here. "If Wenger plays Walcott through the middle, then Arsenal win the FA Cup and Theo re-signs for the club, it's that simple," said Nicholas. "Giroud has been poor and Wenger has been giving people their opportunities in FA Cup. Now it's Theo's chance. "He looks sharp and hungry, Wenger has held him back and unleashed him against West Brom. At 26 and fully fit again, Theo is ready to be a top-class player and must start on Saturday. "Giroud has been poor and is too static. If you're an Aston Villa defender, then you want to play against Giroud, not Walcott making those runs in behind. "Arsenal's passing dies around a static forward and that's what Giroud has turned into in recent weeks. If Walcott starts, then that pushes the defence 10-15 yards deeper to cover for his pace and allows the creative players room to work and cause problems." Follow Charlie's Sky Bet prediction for the FA Cup final here.

Southampton need to strengthen for Europa League challenge, says Matt Le Tissier

Midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has been linked with an exit, as has defender Nathaniel Clyne – for whom they turned down a £10m offer from Liverpool – and former Saints forward Le Tissier believes the more demanding schedule means they must look to bring some new faces in over the summer. “The squad will need strengthening, first and foremost,” said Le Tissier, speaking to Sky Sports News HQ from the Well Child Ed Chamberlin Classic golf day. Morgan Schneiderlin has been linked with Arsenal and Manchester United Morgan Schneiderlin has been linked with Arsenal and Manchester United “We’ve seen plenty of examples of where clubs have gone into the Europa League and perhaps their league form has suffered a little bit because of the amount of games they were playing. “We might lose Morgan Schneiderlin or Nathaniel Clyne, possibly, but if we do we’ve proven in the past we can go out and replace properly. “I think in Morgan’s case he’s been quoted as saying if a Champions League club came in he’d want to go that way, and you can’t blame the boy for that. But it would be nice if we could keep hold of everyone and challenge for Europe again next season. “Our top scorer from last season in Jay Rodriguez, we’ll have him as a new signing during the summer – he’ll come back ready for the start of the season so that will be a bonus.

Roberto Firmino: Everything you need to know about the Manchester United target

Plucked from the second tier of Brazilian football by Bundesliga mid-table entertainers Hoffenheim, the brace-clad teenager struggled to adapt to foreign climes initially, and it took three seasons for us to see the best of this precocious talent, but it was worth the wait. Since the start of the 2013-14, Firmino has weighed in with 23 goals and 21 assists in the German top flight, and has attracted interested from several of Europe’s elite clubs, as well as being on Louis van Gaal’s radar. He was a stand-out performer for Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga this season as he scored seven goals and assisted a further 10 - a total bettered only by Manchester City target Kevin De Bruyne and Werder Bremen's Zlatko Junuzovic. The 23-year-old has also excelled on the international stage already. As Brazil have looked to bounce back for the Mineirao Massacre at the hands of eventual World Cup champions Germany one year ago, Firmino has offered returning coach Dunga a new lease of life. Currently in Chile with the Brazil squad at the Copa America, Firmino has been deployed as a false nine by Dunga and has shone in the role - scoring three goals and registering an assist in two starts and four substitute appearances - including the winner in a nonchalant performance in Brazil’s recent victory over Honduras.

Croatia apologise after swastika cut into Split pitch

The Croatian FA has apologised after a swastika was imprinted on the pitch for their European Qualifier with Italy on Friday night. Snow Patrol singer Gary Lightbody joins Northern Ireland for training

Asked if there had been a singalong on the bus while making their way to training, Lightbody said, "Some of the lads started singing my songs which was nice." "It was like listening to a CD," joked midfielder Oliver Norwood. "It's great that people like him want to be involved with our group. It gives us a lift." Victory for Northern Ireland would move them top of Group F with four games remaining. "With the other teams playing each other (Finland v Hungary) it's massive and maybe we could have a little dream if we get three points," added Norwood. With Northern Ireland hitting the right notes in qualifying Lightbody says he would happily record a European Championships song to mark the achievement should they progress. Watch Northern Ireland v Romania live on Sky Sports 5 from 7.30pm on Saturday.

England Under-21 1-0 Belarus Under-21: Ben Gibson scores late winner

England Under-21s signed off before next week's UEFA European Championship with a laboured 1-0 win in their warm-up friendly with 10-man Belarus at Oakwell. Despite a plethora of Premier League stars in their starting line-up and coming off the bench, including man-of-the-moment Harry Kane, Gareth Southgate's side had to wait until the 82nd minute to break down a Belarus side who only arrived in South Yorkshire 25 minutes before kick-off. The decisive moment of the game came when defender Ben Gibson poked home from close range after goalkeeper Uladzislau Vasiliuchak had spilled Luke Garbutt's free-kick. It was a dominant display from England in terms of possession and territory, but a vast improvement will be required if they are to make a splash at the tournament in the Czech Republic, which gets under way against Portugal next Thursday. The evening had started promisingly as, given kick-off was delayed by 30 minutes owing to the late arrival of the visitors, who only came out to warm-up 15 minutes before the rescheduled start after being held up by a lorry fire on the M1, it was no surprise that England took early control of proceedings. Gibson planted a header wide from James Ward-Prowse's corner while Saido Berahino had an effort disallowed for offside after Alex Prichard's shot had been blocked. Despite their team bus' late arrival, Belarus still managed to park it in front of their goal as they set up to frustrate the Young Lions, who kept on knocking. Berahino had an effort well saved by the legs of Vasiliuchak, who then palmed away a fierce Nathan Redmond drive from distance while several neat passing moves broke down with the final ball. Without creating anything of note, Belarus began to provide more of a test for Southgate's side who found that their own chances began to dry up. The 15-minute period either side of half-time was lacklustre and at odds with a notion within the England camp that they have a serious chance in the Czech Republic. For all their possession, and it was almost exclusive, they did very little with it and Southgate had to turn to star duo Kane and Danny Ings on the hour. England created their best since the early part of the first half in the 68th minute when Ings got in down the left and pulled back perfectly for Garbutt, whose first-time effort was parried by Vasiliuchak. Kane's presence brought some renewed threat to the England front line and with his impressive touch, physical presence and pace he looked a class above everyone else on the pitch. The Tottenham striker had nothing to do with the winning goal, though, as Gibson was in the right place to convert after some slapdash handling from Vasiliuchak following Garbutt's free-kick, which was awarded after Mikalai Zolatau saw red for a nasty challenge on Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Kane and Ings both went close to adding gloss to the scoreline but England had to settle for one as their attention turns to the Czech Republic.

Barcelona's Lionel Messi could stand trial on tax fraud charges

Lionel Messi could stand trial for tax evasion after a Barcelona court threw out an appeal lodged by his lawyers. The case stems from allegations that Messi and his father, Jorge, should have paid Spanish tax authorities €4.16m (£3m) on earnings between 2007 and 2009. Prosecutors accused the Messis of evading tax by funnelling income derived from the player's image rights through "purely instrumental entities" in Switzerland, Belize and Uruguay. COPA AMERICA - 13rd Jun ArgentinavParaguay Argentina1/3 Draw4/1 Paraguay8/1 1ST GOALSCORER - 13rd Jun ArgentinavParaguay Lionel Messi5/2 Sergio Aguero7/2 Gonzalo Higuain4/1 Bet now The scheme is alleged to have commenced when Messi was a minor and both the Argentina forward and his father have denied any wrongdoing. But a ruling at Barcelona’s provincial high court on Wednesday has paved the way for Messi to stand trial, after stating he should not be granted impunity for not knowing what was happened with his finances. Messi and his father made a €5m (£3.6m) “corrective payment” to Spanish authorities in August 2013 to clear the outstanding sum and the interest that would have been due on the amount. Messi, who has just won the treble with Barcelona, is a four-time FIFA World Player of the Year and is regarded by many as the best player in the history of football. He left his homeland of Argentina to join Barcelona as a 13-year-old and made his debut for the Catalan giants at the age of 17.

Arsenal return likely for Lukas Podolski

Lukas Podolski says he is likely to return to Arsenal to complete the last year of his contract. Podolski, 30, spent much of this season on the bench, first with Arsenal and then on a temporary move to Inter Milan. Unable to make the move to Inter Milan a permanent one, Podolski said his immediate future was most likely to be back at the Emirates. Lukas Podolski Podolski scored just one goal in his stint in the Serie A but said his playing days were far from over. He's always in a good mood."

MARTIN SAYS: Yes John, you are right. Turf Moor waved goodbye to the Premier League on Saturday as Stoke City held Burnley to a goalless draw. The third stalemate of the season confirmed Burnley's fans have witnessed just 35 Premier League goals all season - that's a goal every 49 minutes of action.

Remarkably, champions Chelsea occupy second spot on this list, with Stamford Bridge exhibiting just 41 goals this season. Let's not forget they have one game at home remaining when before they lift the Premier League trophy aloft on Super Sunday. Compare that to Old Trafford and the Etihad - which have both seen 56 Premier League goals this season, and Manchester City still have one more home game to come. The all-time Premier League low came in 2006/07, where those in attendance at the 19 games held at the City of Manchester Stadium (now Etihad) were 'treated' to a meagre 26 top-flight goals. Stuart Pearce's final season as Manchester City manager ended with the club avoiding relegation by four points as he was replaced by former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson. Elland Road saw 28 goals throughout the entirety of the 1996/97 season as Howard Wilkinson, and then George Graham, guided Leeds to a mid-table finish. In recent times, a season of upheaval at White Hart Lane in 2008/09, which saw Juande Ramos replaced by Harry Redknapp as manager and more than 30 player comings and goings, equated to just 31 goals finding the back of the net.

Martin Tyler's stats: Free-scoring champions and goal-shy grounds

Sky Sports' Martin Tyler brings you the latest edition of his teaser ahead of Manchester United's Premier League match against Arsenal at Old Trafford. In his regular stats column, Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler looks at high-scoring Premier League champions, and goal-shy stadiums... How to send your questions to Martin:Arsenal's 1-1 draw at Manchester United on Super Sunday saw them claim their first point at Old Trafford since a goalless draw there in May 2009. Arsenal have won only four of their last 26 Premier League meetings with United and, on each occasion, United have won the championship - so they were hollow victories really. Victor Valdes became only the second goalkeeper used by Louis van Gaal, and the 33rd player used in the Premier League by the Dutchman this season. David de Gea has started all 43 games - and Valdes will presumably start the 44th. It was his first senior appearance under Van Gaal since he made 11 for him during his tenure at Barcelona. Ander Herrera scored his sixth Premier League goal with only his seventh Premier League shot on target. That goal ended a run of seven consecutive away wins for Arsenal in all competitions this season. It was Manchester United's 21st and final home game of the season (19 Premier League and one FA Cup replay against Cambridge and one FA Cup quarter-final against Arsenal). That's their lowest number of home games since 1958/59, when they played 21 league games at home and no cup or European games. There may not have been many games at the Theatre of Dreams this season but there have been plenty of goals, as our first question explains... Hi Martin! Am I right in thinking Turf Moor witnessed only 35 goals in the Premier League this season? If this is right, is this a record low? (John, Colchester)

Raheem Sterling risks career by listening to 'bad advice,' says Thierry Henry

Raheem Sterling: Warned by Thierry Henry over listening to bad advice Sky Sports pundit Thierry Henry has warned Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling that he risks "destroying his life and career" by listening to "bad advice". Sterling has been linked with a move away from Anfield following reports he is not willing to sign a new deal, but Henry is advising the 20-year-old to think twice before making a wrong decision. Speaking after watching Arsenal draw 0-0 with Sunderland, Henry told Sky Sports: "I think we all know that he's been receiving some bad advice. Champions League: Jamie Redknapp picks his best XI

Ahead of Saturday’s Champions League final between Juventus and Barcelona, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has picked his best XI from the competition this season. Read on to see who made his team – and who he’d put in charge to manage them… Goalkeeper – Gianluigi Buffon, Juventus INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLIES - Today FinlandvEstonia Finland8/13 Draw13/5 Estonia4/1 CORRECT SCORE - Today FinlandvEstonia 1-04/10-111/12-011/21-218/12-115/20-228/1Bet now Gianluigi Buffon: 'No one has more clean sheets in CL this season' Gianluigi Buffon: 'No one has more clean sheets in CL this season' People talk about Juventus’ good defence but to have a good defence you need to have a good goalkeeper. A couple of years ago I thought maybe he was over the hill but he’s come back and is in the form of his life right now. He’s been instrumental in getting them to the final. No ‘keeper has kept more clean sheets in the competition this season than him (six), and he also has the best save percentage of the top shot-stoppers (81.58 per cent). Right-back – Dani Alves, Barcelona Dani Alves: 'Most attacking right-back ever' Dani Alves: 'Most attacking right-back ever' People like Alves change how positions are perceived. He was an outside right/right-winger many years ago and he’s turned himself into probably the most attacking right-back the world has ever seen. He’s fantastic at getting forward, has an eye for goal and a tremendous understanding with Lionel Messi down the right. He might not be the absolute best defensively – we might find out more about that aspect of his game when he leaves Barca – but he’s perfect for the way Barcelona play. Only Messi has made more assists than him in the Champions League this season, which perfectly shows his attacking contributions. Centre-back – Giorgio Chiellini, Juventus Giorgio Chiellini: 'A warrior' Giorgio Chiellini: 'A warrior' Chiellini may not be the easiest on the eye but he’s a warrior and, in terms of his will to win and desire, you can’t fault him. He gets in the team on his bravery and he’s the sort of guy you want in your side. There have been outstanding performances this season from the likes of John Terry, Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano, but I find it difficult to pick two better centre-backs than Chiellini and Diego Godin – who have each recorded six clean sheets this season.

Arsenal can't handle playing under pressure, says Paul Merson

Arsenal are the side best in the league until the pressure's on, according to former player Paul Merson. Arsenal booked their place in the Champions League group stage with a third-placed Premier League finish. But though they managed league wins against Manchester City and Liverpool, a surprise Champions League exit at the hands of Monaco means questions still persist over their big-game mentality.Jamie Carragher says Liverpool’s 6-1 defeat by Stoke on the final day of the season, their worst-ever Premier League defeat, was “embarrassing”. On Steven Gerrard’s last game for the club, Brendan Rodgers’ side were 5-0 down at half-time at the Britannia Stadium, something Carragher admits is unacceptable. Rodgers has in the past received the backing of the Liverpool board despite a disappointing season, which they have finished in sixth place following a second-place finish last term, but Carragher says it will be a long summer ahead.

Some critics have demanded Rodgers be dismissed following a largely lacklustre season for the Reds after they finished sixth in the Premier League - eight points off the Champions League places. It has been reported Liverpool chairman Tom Werner will fly into Merseyside on Tuesday to oversee the club's end-of-season review and Souness strongly believes the American should not wield the axe.

Quique Sanchez Flores perfect for Watford, says Guillem Balague

Guillem Balague has backed Quique Sanchez Flores to succeed at Watford Sky Sports Spanish football pundit Guillem Balague is tipping Quique Sanchez Flores to be a success at Vicarage Road. Watford have confirmed the appointment of the former Valencia and Benfica boss on a two-year contract and Balague believes him to be the perfect fit for the club as they prepare to return to the Premier League after an eight-year absence. Flores guided Atletico Madrid to the Europa League title in 2010 with a win over Fulham in the final. Barcelona striker Luis Suarez is rightly a Champions League winner, says Jamie Carragher

Jamie Carragher was delighted for former Liverpool team-mate Luis Suarez Luis Suarez is where he belongs as a Champions League winner, says Jamie Carragher. Suarez scored as Barcelona beat Juventus 3-1 in Berlin to win Europe's elite competition and complete a stunning cup treble. The Uruguay international joined the Spanish giants from Liverpool last summer and has tasted instant success - something Carragher says echoes his talent.Barcelona have swept aside all before them this season, winning La Liga and the Copa del Rey before sealing their place in history with a triumph in the Champions League final against Juventus in Berlin. So where do they go from here? Can this team - who are currently under a transfer embargo until January - get any better? That was the challenge handed to Sky Sports expert Graeme Souness after he watched their triumph in the Olympiastadion. He pointed to Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano at the heart of the defence as an area for improvement. Jeremy Mathieu and Thomas Vermaelen are also in their defensive ranks but Souness believes that is one area of the squad that could benefit from reinforcements

The Page That Curses The Pull Out If you forget corruption (and everything else), the World Cup in Qatar is going to be brilliant. Plus the new definition of 'agreed', and more besides...

One Rule For One? Mediawatch greatly enjoyed today's papers telling us how Jamie Vardy's conviction for assault and wearing of an electronic tag for six months 'made him the player he was'. Mediawatch learns that 'you could never accuse Vardy of having it easy', and that 'he is not the type to hide from his past'. This comes hot on the heels of us being told that Jack Wilshere's antics was putting his future career at risk after he said the word "s**t" in public. Maybe Jack might just be able to make it after all? Stick To The Script The Sun's Steven Howard has an opinion on the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and it's a little ballsy. 'We will have to accept the fact that the World Cup will be in Qatar in 2022,' Howard writes. 'And guess what? Though the voting process might have stunk the place out, it's going to be brilliant.' Yay, go Qatar. It's going to be the best. Just so long as you aren't a migrant worker or the family of a migrant worker, of course. Or homosexual, given that homosexual acts between adult females and adult males are both illegal in Qatar. The country has no legal recognition of same-sex marriages, civil unions or domestic partnership benefits, and laws stipulates up to five years imprisonment for male homosexuality. But forget all the corruption, dreadful human rights and appalling labour conditions. 'It's going to be brilliant'!!! The Greed For Agreed 'Manchester United transfer news: 'Morgan Schneiderlin agreed, Ilkay Gundogan deal, Paul Pogba bid,' reads the headline on the Metro football website. Jamie Sanderson: Source machine. Mediawatch has an idea of what 'agreed' means. It means it's sorted, even if only verbally. Deal done, basically. It's on. Perhaps we were working off the wrong definition. That Metro story links through to the following story on their own website: 'Manchester United 'beat off Arsenal to finalise £25m Morgan Schneiderlin transfer deal.' 'Finalise' is a pretty strong word too. 'Manchester United are thought to have beaten off competition from Arsenal to agree a deal for Morgan Schneiderlin,' that story begins. 'Are thought'?! It was you told us it was agreed? That Metro story actually links to the Daily Star The axis of bulls**t doesn't stop there though, because Schneiderlin didn't even say that. Instead that piece refers to week-old quotes in which the Frenchman says he wants to play in the Champions League. From "If I leave Southampton, it is for a club that plays better than the Europa League" to 'deal agreed with Manchester United' in a week without anything actually happen. Please tell us that the race to the bottom at least has a finishing line?

F365's Transfer Guide - Part Five Our final part, and the question of what on earth will happen at West Ham? Plus there is much to ponder for Spurs - evolution or yet another revolution at White Hart Lane...

What they need A new spine and a bit of ambition. Pochettino has already added Kevin Wimmer but another proven centre-half is required, on top of a central midfielder and a striker. Spurs will be wary of beginning another revolution, but the reality is that there is much fat to trim from the squad. Most of it was bought in the last three years. What they will probably get Wimmer is in and right-back Kieran Tripper is likely to be Spurs' reward for offering £12m for free-agent Danny Ings, thus allowing Burnley to make a case for larger compensation from Liverpool. Charlie Austin would be a smart acquisition, while Juve's Fernando Llorente and Atletico's Mario Mandzukic have also been linked. Both are unlikely to be willing to play second fiddle to Harry Kane. The Morgan Schneiderlin link refuses to go away, despite the midfielder saying he will only leave Southampton for Champions League football. Pochettino is surely more likely to shop abroad, however. What's been said "I do not have the same possibility to spend a lot of money like the manager here two seasons ago. We need to be clever in the way that we build the new squad, because it is difficult to compete with the money. We want good players, with the right profile. We need to look forward and learn from the past. We have a different plan to develop over the next few years and we need to deliver it" - Mauricio Pochettino, May 16 WATFORD What they need A manager first and foremost. Some Premier League experience would not go amiss, but youth and hunger can often compensate for a lack of experience. Expect the Hornets to strengthen in almost every area. Largely because they need to. What they will probably get Plenty of loans from Udinese, perhaps? Watford have been linked with a move for Blackburn's Rudy Gestede, but attack is the area in which the Hornets are probably strongest. Adlene Guedioura will likely make his loan permanent. In terms of defenders, Watford might be best looking for loans. Andreas Christensen from Chelsea, perhaps? What's been said "Speaking to the owner I feel they will be bringing in some lads with Premier League experience. It is not going to be a case like Burnley's, where they have said 'we are going to stick with you lot'. I think there will probably be four or five lads coming in with Premier League experience and then there are people like myself who are absolutely buzzing to be there" - Captain Troy Deeney, May 6

Fifa paid Irish to stop legal action over Thierry Henry handball

Fifa paid the Football Association of Ireland 5m euros (£3.6m) to stop legal action after France controversially beat Ireland in a World Cup play-off. FAI chief executive John Delaney said he had believed they had a case against Fifa after French striker Thierry Henry's handball in the 2009 match. Delaney said a "legitimate agreement" was made to drop the claim after Ireland missed the 2010 World Cup. Fifa president Sepp Blatter is quitting with the organisation in crisis. Delaney's comments come after a turbulent nine days for football's world governing body amid claims of "systemic and deep-rooted" corruption. Fifa is facing two criminal investigations by both the US for widespread bribery allegations and Swiss authorities over the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding processes. The Republic of Ireland were 16 minutes away from a penalty shootout for a place in the 2010 finals in South Africa when Henry handled in the build-up to William Gallas's extra-time equaliser in the second leg of the play-off in Paris. The 2-1 aggregate win sent France to the tournament, where they were knocked out of the group stages amid a player strike. France v Ireland Ireland defender Richard Dunne said he felt "cheated" at the time of the handball A Fifa spokesman confirmed it had "entered into an agreement with FAI in order to put an end to any claims" against it. But the organisation said the payment was a $5m (£3.26m) loan and was granted for "the construction of a stadium in Ireland". The spokesman added that the FAI was to repay the money if Ireland qualified for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, which they failed to do. Fifa wrote off the loan on 31 December 2014. On Thursday, the FAI said the settlement was made without any conditions and was reached "following strong legal advice", with the money going towards the new Aviva Stadium - opened in May 2010 after the old Landsdowne Road ground was redeveloped.
